Preview | THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (UK Tour)

As well as recently re-opening in the West End, the acclaimed National Theatre production of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time embarks on a UK tour throughout 2015. Winner of 7 Olivier Awards including ‘Best New Play’, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time brings Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel to thrilling life on stage, adapted by two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott.

Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

The UK tour begins in December 2014 before visiting 31 venues including Wolverhampton Grand Theatre from 16 - 21 February 2015. Book tickets for Wolverhampton here.

SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (Birmingham Hippodrome) Pantomime Press Launch

In spectacular style Qdos Pantomimes and Birmingham Hippodrome launch a brand new pantomime Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs with an all-star line up that rivals any West End production. The show, which received its press launch on 23 September opens on Thursday 19th December 2013 for a six and a half week run with 77 performances until Sunday 2 February 2014.

The cast features a dashing prince in the shape of John Partridge (Christian in Eastenders) whose theatrical roles until now have included Rum Tum Tugger in Cats and Electra in Starlight Express. John has recently finished a run as Zach in A Chorus Line at the London Palladium and said: "The Birmingham Hippodrome really is the London Palladium of pantomimes, it's the one to do!" The Birmingham Hippodrome has a long standing reputation as the venue for the UK's premiere pantomime and attracts the largest audience of any other in the world.

Making his panto debut in Birmingham is TV fashion guru Gok Wan as the Man In The Mirror: "This is the first pantomime I've ever performed in and what a touch to be able to get the biggest in the world! I must have done something right.... but we won't go into that!"

Another debut being made in Birmingham this Christmas is Gary Wilmot's Dame. Gary appeared in Cinderella at the Hippodrome in 1995, playing Buttons and has previously played Birmingham as Caractacus Potts in the touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. "Pantomime is quite often people's first experience of theatre and in my first time playing Dame I've got to make sure I get it right and make it a great experience for everyone watching."

BBC Over The Rainbow's search for Dorothy winner Danielle Hope was announced at the launch in the title role of Snow White. Danielle shot to fame after winning the Andrew Lloyd Webber reality series and playing Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz at the London Palladium. Danielle has since appeared as Fantine in the West End production of Les Misérables. "This is my first time in pantomime and my first time in Birmingham! From what I've seen of the town it's huge and the high street looks fab for shopping! It's great for me because it's equidistant from London where I live and Urmston in Manchester where I'm from and my family are!"

Also featuring in the cast is Dynasty legend Stephanie Beacham as the Wicked Queen who realises panto can have a longer lasting effect than just a few hours entertainment: "Pantomime is family time, bring the children along and get them in young and they'll always be theatre-goers." Ventriloquist Paul Zerdin and puppet friend Sam also star in the show alongside Matt Slack as a new character Oddjob.

This pantomime promises to be highlight of the festive season in Birmingham with an ensemble of physical theatre performers bringing the magnificent seven dwarfs to life as you've never seen in a panto before! Summer may have only just left us but Birmingham Hippodrome is truly in festive fever for the opening of Britain's biggest pantomime. The countdown is on!

Tickets for Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs are priced between £12 to £39 with discounts and concessions available. HAIRSPRAY (UK TOUR) Adrian Hansel replaces Marcus Collins - Cast Announcement

Producers Stage Entertainment announced last week that due to ongoing health problems Marcus Collins has been withdrawn from the UK tour of Hairspray. Collins, who played the role of Seaweed J Stubbs from Manchester in February through to Nottingham in July is currently replaced by Fela Lufadeju, an understudy. The Producers said "we are sorry that Marcus won't be able to carry on with Hairspray and thank him for his amazing performance and the sterling work he's done for this production. Everyone at Stage Entertainment and the touring company will miss him and wishes him the very best for the future."

Adrian as Seaweed in the London production at the Shaftesbury Theatre

For the final venues in Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Norwich the role of Seaweed will be played by Adrian Hansel who has been rehearsing with the show in Dublin. Hansel who is no stranger to the role was in the original London cast playing Seaweed from the show's opening in October 2007 until it's closure at the Shaftesbury Theatre in March 2010. Previous credits also include 'Hud' in Hair (Pleasance Theatre, London), 'Tyrone Jackson' in Fame (Edinburgh Playhouse and Aldwych Theatre, London) and 'Rusty' in Starlight Express (Apollo Victoria Theatre, London) to name a few. Adrian has also appeared as a soloist on multiple tours with Michael Ball.

He said: "I actually thought I'd never wear my Seaweed costume again once I'd left the Shaftesbury stage door on my last show! Hairspray was a huge part of my life and I absolutely loved it and I was happy to leave it at that... so when I got asked to replace Marcus Collins and finish the 2013 tour I wasn't all together sure that I really wanted to! I saw the show and after seeing the amazing cast and hearing all the songs again, I thought why not!"

Adrian played alongside three different Motormouth Maybelle's - Johnnie Fiori, Sharon D. Clarke and Sandra Marvin whilst in the London production and is delighted to be reunited with Marvin on the tour.  "I'm really excited to be working with my best friend Sandra Marvin again, she's incredible. The tour will also mean I'm reunited with Wendy Somerville who was in the original London cast. It will be great to work with some fantastic new people too!"

Other casting news includes CHARLES RUHRMUND who replaces Josh Piterman as Corny Collins for the final venues. Charles was the understudy for Corny on the previous UK tour of Hairspray. Other credits include We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre, Sonny in Grease at the Piccadilly Theatre and he has recently filmed for the new Muppets movie due for release in early 2014.

The rest of the cast remain unchanged with Mark Benton leading as Edna Turnblad, Freya Sutton as Tracy, Paul Rider as Wilbur, Luke Striffler as Link, Lauren Hood as Penny, Lucy Benjamin as Velma Von Tussle, Gemma Sutton as Amber and Gabrielle Brooks as Little Inez.

Link Larkin - Luke Striffler is suitably impressed with Baltimore's latest recruit! It should leave you very excited by this latest casting.

Don't delay in booking to see Adrian back in the role of Seaweed in this limited run until September.

PIPE DREAM (Union Theatre) London Stage Premiere

Following the huge success of last year's all-male hit Pirates Of Penzance (winner of Best Off-West End Production) director Sasha Regan and choreographer Lizzi Gee have once again joined creative forces. This time for the London stage premiere of Pipe Dream - one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most overlooked pieces, almost 60 years after it's American premiere the production finally makes it to the London stage at the Union Theatre for a strictly limited period from 31st July - 31st August 2013.

This is a rare opportunity to see the seventh musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein which premiered on Broadway on 30th November 1955 at the Shubert Theatre where it received the largest advance ticket sales in Broadway history at that point $1.2 million. The production was nominated for 9 Tony Awards. Nowadays productions of this musical are extremely rare in America and now for the first time London audiences can experience Pipe Dream.

Original Playbill for the 1955 Broadway production starring Helen Traubel,
William Johnson and Judy Tyler.

Inspired by "Cannery Row" and "Sweet Thursday" - the novels of John Steinbeck, the drifters and layabouts of Cannery Row are brought to life in this unlikely story of romance and hope set against the backdrop of a recovering America following the Second World War. After the success of classics such as Oklahoma! and Carousel, Rodgers and Hammerstein struck a new tone with Pipe Dream focussing on the outcasts and less fortunate members of society in their quest for a sense of belonging, acceptance and above all else, love.

The role of Doc will be played by Kieran Brown who most recently played the title role in the UK Premiere of Maury Yeston's Phantom (Ye Olde Rose & Crown, London). Other credits include Elphaba's Father and understudy for the Wizard and Doctor Dillamond in Wicked (Apollo Victoria), understudy for Raoul in Love Never Dies (Adelphi Theatre), Les Misérables (Palace Theatre) Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert (O2 Arena).

The role of Suzy will be played by Charlotte Scott who most recently understudied and played the part of Kathy Seldon in Singin In The Rain at the Palace Theatre. Other theatre credits include understudy Glinda in Wicked (Apollo Victoria), understudy for Janet in the UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show, understudy Serena, Lambchops and Mabel in Fame (UK Tour), understudy Ariel Moore and Wendy Jo in Footloose (UK Tour) and understudy for Jemima, Rumpleteazer and Jellylorum in Cats (UK and Italian Tours).

The production also stars Virge Gilhrist as Fauna.

The ensemble are David Hayden (Mack), Nick Martland (Hazel), Matt Parsons (Ray), Christopher Connor (Eddie), Shane Landers (Jim), Mitchell Jarvis (Johnny), John Hicks (Joe), Joshua Lovell (George), Georgie Burdett (Marjorie), Catherine Sagar (Mabel), Michaela Cartmell (Millicent), Rebecca Fennelly (Agnes), Clare Duffy (Girl) and Alexandra Lloyd-Hamilton (Emma).

GUIDO! (Edinburgh Fringe) Press Announcement 2013

It's 1605 and the Catholics are not happy. The oppressive rule of King James I has left them hungry for rebellion and they need a figurehead to lead them out of the pub and onwards to freedom. Guido Fawkes is the man they have been waiting for: he just doesn't know it yet!

Guido! is written by Daniel Henry Kaes and composed by David Ferris. Directed  by Midlands-born Cambridge University student Matt Lim, the show premiered at the ADC Theatre in June 2012. A privilege to launch during the final academic week - May Week - the show received an enthusiastic response. The show has been revised for the Fringe and represents the original writing of the Cambridge students in a musical comedy adventure. The production brings together life events and characters from a notorious era in English history in a mock-epic as grand as Pirates of The Caribbean with the musical theatre attitude of Jerry Springer: The Opera

Guido! transfers from Cambridge to the C Too Main House at this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is likely to be one of the most fun, ridiculous and brilliantly playful shows you will see at the year's Fringe.

THE LION KING (UK Tour) Birmingham Hippodrome Press Launch

After hosting Beauty And The Beast and Mary Poppins in previous years, Disney's The Lion King is finally coming to the Birmingham Hippodrome as part of a UK/Ireland tour with the London production still going strong after 13 years at the Lyceum Theatre.

The launch event was held at the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham and guests were treated to a canapé reception before the main presentation. I was very fortunate enough to be Disney's guest. The event provided a behind the scenes look on the creation of Disney's smash hit.

Disney Theatrical Productions director of Marketing and Creative, Steven Crocker, lead a fascinating presentation informing over 200 invited guests of how the story of The Lion King made it from screen to stage. The presentation began with a performance of "The Circle Of Life" lead by Gugwana Dlamini (UK/Ireland Tour Cast) as Rafiki accompanied by the Birmingham Gospel Choir. The music and lyrics of Elton John and Tim Rice are just perfect. The initial performance alone was enough to wet appetites but there was plenty more to come. There were also performances from Jonathan Andrew Hume and Ava Brennan -  the London cast's Simba and Nala.

Ava Brennan, Johnathan Andrew Hume and Gugwana Dlamini pose for the press photographers.

A great deal of the presentation was devoted to Julie Taymor. Not only did she design the costumes, but the masks too, co-designed the puppets, added additional lyrics to the show and to top it off - directed it. There were masks for Simba, Nala, Mufasa and Scar on display with the puppet of Zazu. The inspiration behind each mask has a specific relevance to the character. Stephen Crocker explained that the mask for Mufasa for example, has a circular mane and is very obviously circular in design because he is at the centre of the circle of life. The performers faces are never hidden and this is known as the 'Double Event'. The incredible performance given by the actor is most visible through their face and the mask shouldn't hide or restrict this. The mask sits on top of the actors head to ensure the lion element of the costume design is not lost. The costumes the actors wear are not "lion suits" and without the mask they do not distinctly represent a lion. They are most unlike the obvious animalistic costumes in the musical Cats. Instead the actors wear costumes that again represent the characteristics of their lion and feature traditional African print material and are decorated with beads.

Julie Taymor's costume design for the adult Simba.

The smaller characters in the show such as Timon the Meerkat and Zazu the Hornbill are represented using other methods. The Japanese style of Bunraku puppetry brings Timon to life with his puppeteer disguised as the grass. Zazu is also a puppet and sometimes flies on a wire and at times is hand-operated with his puppeteer disguised as the sky. The video below shows Crocker demonstrating how the puppet for Zazu operates.

Not only are the costumes loyal to the shows African routes - the script is too, with a lot of traditional African chanting in Zulu, Swahili and Sotho to name a few. Lebo M is the mastermind behind the sound of the Pride Lands. Rafiki, the shaman Baboon has perhaps the hardest job as seen here :

The show has a cast of 50, with a further 100 people working backstage to make a team of 150 involved with the show at any one performance. The cast is made up of people from 17 different countries. The show is touring the UK and Ireland as well as other productions of it currently touring the US, on Broadway and in Tokyo, Hamburg, Sapporo and Madrid.
